Florida Trial & Litigation Attorney Defends Florida State Senate, Fights Special Interest Lobby Groups

Tallahassee, FL (PRWEB) April 11, 2006 -- Florida Senate president Tom Lee recently hired attorney Ken Sukhia of, Conwell Sukhia and Kirkpatrick, P.A., to represent the Florida Senate in defending the Constitutionality of new legislation regulating Florida lobbyists. The Lobbyist Compensation and Expenditure Act requires disclosure of lobbying fees and limits the spending lobbyists can make for the benefit of legislators. The bill was passed during a special session of the Florida Legislature called by Governor Jeb Bush in December.

The plaintiffs filing the case (Case No.: 4:06cv123 SPM/WCS in the United States District Court, Northern District of Florida, Tallahassee Division) are the Florida Association of Professional Lobbyists and several of its members, who claim in part that the Lobbyist Compensation and Expenditure Act violates their right to privacy and free assembly, and their ability to petition their legislators. Having been removed to federal court by the defendants, the case is currently before U.S. District Judge Stephan P. Mickle of the Northern District of Florida.

Mr. Ken Sukhia, of the law firm Conwell Sukhia & Kirkpatrick P.A., has extensive trial and appellate experience in federal court. He served as both an Assistant U.S. Attorney and as the President-appointed United States Attorney for the Northern District of Florida. Ken Sukhia also has an extensive track record in Constitutional litigation. In the 2000 presidential election contest, he was hired by President George W. Bush and Vice President Dick Cheney to serve as federal trial counsel in the military ballot case and as sole trial and appellate counsel in the federal case brought by Al Gore to exclude all Florida ballots received after election day.

Mr. Sukhia was also hired by the State of Florida to defend the Constitutionality of Florida’s Parental Notice of Abortion Act, served as Florida Governor Jeb Bush’s campaign counsel and personal lawyer, represented Ralph Nader in opposing an effort to remove him from Florida’s 2004 Presidential ballot and served as personal counsel to Charlie Crist prior to his election as the Florida Attorney General.
