California Volunteers Helping in Hurricane Relief Volunteers Cautioned Against 'Self-Deploying'

(PRWEB) September 3, 2005 -- Thousands of Californians are asking how they can help relieve the suffering of people in the Southeast who are reeling from the devastation of Hurricane Kristina, said Brian Bolton, Executive Director of Volunteer Centers of California. Bolton reports that Volunteer Centers throughout the state are receiving calls from people who desperately want to help but are not part of an established relief organization. The callers are being interviewed and referred to agencies like the American Red Cross and Salvation Army where they can receive proper training and, perhaps, be deployed as part of that organizations relief effort.

Volunteer Centers of California urge that people NOT travel to the southeast in an effort to help wherever they can. These spontaneous,
unaffiliated volunteers who 'self-deploy' can add to the chaos and suffering of the victims of this horrible disaster, Bolton said. There are no hotel rooms, food or water available for people who show up and are not affiliated with an active relief organization. It is a dangerous area and spontaneous volunteers put themselves at risk as well as adding to the incredible difficulty of managing a relief operation of this magnitude.

Caryl Hallberg, Executive Director of the Volunteer Center of Napa Valley said, If Napa County citizens want to help, they can make a cash donation to one of the agencies leading relief efforts or they can support the Volunteer Center of Napa Valleys local disaster volunteer program. If they want to volunteer for the Southern United States, they should call the Napa American Red Cross. People who are inspired to help in disaster relief should contact the Volunteer Center of Napa Valley, American Red Cross, Salvation Army or another agency involved in disaster relief. Sign up for training and get involved in local relief efforts. Once people have training and experience they can be invaluable in supporting relief operations for this hurricane or for future disasters here in Napa.

We urge people to not make or collect donations of food, clothing or other material items for Hurricane Relief. While the thought is generous, the reality is there is no way to warehouse, distribute or manage small, individual gifts of materials across a four-state area in a time of major catastrophe. In disaster relief operations, the best donation is always a cash donation, and it is clear that this relief effort will need huge
financial support.
