Prescription Addiction Radio Show Interviews Bill Janes, Director of the Florida Office of Drug Control, on Sunday, April 6, 2008
Tampa, Fl (PRWEB) April 5, 2008 -- Florida is presently only one of 15 states that does not have legislation in place to protect its citizens from both doctor shoppers and medical professionals who indiscriminately help to put thousands of addictive and dangerous drugs out onto the streets of Florida.
Legislation has been proposed and Bill Janes, the Director of the Florida Office of Drug Control
(http://www.flgov.com/drug_control), will be discussing this in an interview on the "Prescription Addiction Radio Show -- Breaking the Silence" on Sunday night, April 6 on WGUL 860 at 9 p.m. in the Tampa Bay area (streamed live on the internet at http://www.860wgul.com)
A total of 7,741 Floridians died of drug-related deaths in 2006, 7,573 in 2005, and 7,128 in 2004. It is estimated that about 70 percent of the drug-related deaths are from prescription drugs. The preliminary numbers reported for 2007 appear to be increasing over 2006. The Office of Drug Control continually works with state and local partners to reduce drug-overdose deaths in Florida.
Recent reports indicate that nationally, we are losing as many people to deaths being connected to prescription drugs as to gun-related deaths. It appears we are losing more people to prescription-related deaths than driving deaths related to alcohol consumption.
Quoting Mr. Janes in a recent editorial letter to the St. Pete Times: "It is time to stop this outrage in Florida and pass the legislation needed to implement a prescription drug-monitoring database statewide now!"
Larry G, the host, and Bill Janes will welcome callers Sunday night on WGUL. The emotions can run high on this topic. There are few people who do not know of a loved one or individual family member that has been affected by the misuse of too many prescription drugs. This is a chance for the listeners to let Bill Janes, Governor Charlie Crist and your local state legislator know your feelings on this important topic for the citizens of Florida.
The Florida Office of Drug Control, located in the Executive Office of the Governor, Charlie Crist, collaborates with the Office of Planning and Budget to implement a statewide strategy to limit the devastation of substance abuse in Florida's diverse communities.
Bill Janes will appear on the Prescription Addiction Radio Show to update the progress of proposed legislation to create a drug-monitoring database in Florida. The show airs on Sunday night, April 6 on WGUL 860 at 9 p.m. in the Tampa Bay area (streamed live on the internet at http://www.860wgul.com)
