Florida Health Insurance Highlights 2008 Presidential Health Care Plans

(PRWEB) November 29, 2007 -- FloridaHealthInsuranceWeb.com, a health insurance consultant service, has published a non-partisan report of each of presidential candidates positions on healthcare. 'The upcoming elections will impact Florida's health care system' said consultant Morgan Moran in a phone interview, 'it's up to you as Florida residents to turn out January 29 and choose which candidate delivers the best insurance plan'.

There are many views on health care coming out on the campaign trail, some Democrats are offering huge promises; Republicans offer tax breaks, according to Florida health insurance (http://www.floridahealthinsuranceweb.com) consultant Morgan Moran. "The plans put forth by the Republicans offer little or no change in the health care policies currently offered" for Florida's residents, said Moran. Other Republican health insurance plans "offer tax deductions for those who do not have employer-based health care policies".

Rudy Giuliani speaking at a Florida Rally said he "proposes a $7,500 tax break for people who don't have employer-based health insurance." Giuliani opposes any type of government-run health insurance program, but according to Moran, "Giuliani favors giving health care vouchers to poor people".

"Sen. John McCain's health care position is universal-lite," says Moran, he is pushing for "affordable health care that can be made available to all Americans" without some sort of government-mandated system. McCain proposes a smaller $2,500 tax credit to help Floridians buy health insurance.

Another Republican, Mike Huckabee says "guaranteeing health care isn't the government's responsibility". The Huckabee health plan is "made more affordable by limiting medical liability, adopting electronic record-keeping, and focusing on prevention" says health insurance consultant Moran. Huckabee believes "insurance should be deductible for families and transferable among jobs".

One candidate has a lot of experience providing residents with health insurance. Former Massachusetts Gov. "Mitt Romney says health insurance should be extended to all Americans through 'market reforms', not new taxes" or a new government program. "Romney implemented an insurance plan in Massachusetts that makes health insurance mandatory and subsidizes some premiums".

The latest Republican candidate to jump into the 2008 race, actor Fred Thompson, wants to streamline existing programs, and shift focus to prevention and chronic-care management. "Thompson opposes a one-size-fits-all, Washington-controlled program."

Rep. Ron Paul of Texas does not have a clearly stated health care plan. Moran said "Paul has voted in the past against capping malpractice damages; voted for tax-exempt medical savings accounts". Ron Paul also voted against a ban on physician-assisted suicide and favors abolishing Medicare.

"Candidate Tom Tancredo offers health insurance pools" for people not covered by employers. He wants to implement tax-exempt medical savings accounts and to ban physician-assisted suicide.

The Democratic side of the aisle hold the most promise for those looking for affordable health insurance. Sen. Joe Biden of Delaware wants to move toward a national health care system. Biden recently voted to expand the SCHIP and for a Medicare prescription drug benefit.

Sen. Clinton has set goal of universal health coverage by the end of her second term. She wants to require people to buy health insurance and require companies to provide coverage regardless of medical history.

Sen. Chris Dodd of Connecticut wants to extend the congressional health care plan to all Americans. Dodd favors extending Medicare and Medicaid to more families and expanding SCHIP. He also favors prohibiting denial of health insurance on the basis of medical history.

John Edwards would begin putting universal health care in place as soon as he takes office. He proposes paying for his plan by repealing Bush's tax cut on people earning more than $200,000 a year.

Former Sen. Mike Gravel of Alaska proposes what he calls 'a single-payer health care plan' through a voucher system with a modest co-payments and deductibles. People could pay extra for another plan.

Rep. Dennis Kucinich says he proposes "Medicare for all" -- a not-for-profit national health care system with no role for private insurance companies.

Sen. Barack Obama is for creating a national health insurance pool and subsidizing those who can't afford available group rates. Obama would not mandate health coverage but he would require employers to offer insurance or pay into a fund.

Bill Richardson wants America to begin moving toward universal health care by starting with insuring all children under age 5, all working adults and the chronically unemployed. He says 'it can be accomplished without new taxes'.
